Autumn Glory ...

Though most of us are still waiting for the ‘real’ summer to begin in the garden autumn is heralding its arrival.

The little ‘Rain Lily’ Zephyranthes candida has started to flower in response to cooler temperatures and autumn showers. This small bulb is lovely for mass planting as an edging or in pots, quickly forms a nice thick clump with tidy foliage and pretty white flowers. Echinacea (Cone Flower) clumps are flowering well with their show-off fragrant blooms and the buds on the Sasanqua Camellias are getting fatter every day.

The leaves on deciduous trees are slowly developing their autumn colours, it’s a good time to pop into the nursery to select varieties with the most vibrant display, look for Liquidambar, Acer (Maple), Nyssa, amongst the many to choose from. While you’re here check out which Roses are still flowering at this time of year therefore guaranteeing you a long lasting display in your own garden.

Autumn is an excellent time for planting trees and shrubs as the roots quickly settle in to the warm moist soil establishing the plant before the harshness of winter. Autumn is also the perfect time to plant hedging and we have a fantastic selection. Time to think ‘outside the box’ with varieties such as Ilex Helleri – a sweet little prickle free Ilex that makes a good looking low hedge, or perhaps our native Corokia, Griselinia and Pittosporum which establish quickly and make robust hedges which clip well. If you want a hedge with flower power then it would be hard to go past Camellias. For those wanting more of a shelter or wind-break we have a nice grade of Cupressocyparis ovensii which is a tough, disease resistant Cypress which will grow almost anywhere.
