Summer's lease hath all too
short a date...
William Shakespeare, Sonnets
As spring departs and summer announces its arrival with long languid days it is tempting to think that the gardening year is at an end.
All the work carried out throughout the year should now be reaching a peak with the ornamental garden showing its true colours and the vegetable plot and orchard in full production. Summer is a great time to just kick back and enjoy the garden with the most important jobs being watering and harvesting.
For those that have the odd bare patch (no pun intended) or have holiday time to create new gardens there are still plenty of ‘hot’ plants available that will cope with summer conditions. Cannas, Cistus, Gazanias, Gerberas, Pelargoniums, Gardenias and Dianthus, can all be planted now and as long as they are watered in well they will keep flowering throughout the summer. Remember to dead head regularly to encourage re-blooming.
As a general rule plants with grey foliage cope well with hot dry conditions, top performers are Lomandra, Lavenders and Rosemary. It’s a great time to create some colour with pots as well, cheer up entrance ways and patios in an instant with lots of pots with lots of colour. A few minutes work will give you months of pleasure.
If you’re looking for a gift that will keep on giving why not pot up a rose for that special person in your life, choose from ‘Playboy’, ‘My Mum’, ‘Lovely Lady’, or ‘Best Wishes’ to name just a few of our Special Occasion roses.
