Autumn is a second spring
when every leaf is a flower...

Albert Camus

With cooler temperatures and (hopefully soon!) some welcome rain we can at last start to think about autumn in the garden.

Autumn is such a magic season for planting, the soil is warm and moist which means new plants will quickly nestle in to place and establish a good root system before the harshness of winter. If you’re establishing a new garden or perhaps giving a tired area a welcome make-over think about setting the standard with some green architecture in the form of Topiary.

At Wairere we have a wonderful choice of sculptural plants to choose from e.g. Choisya, Camellia and Loropetalum Standards along with Lonicera Balls Standards and Cones. Of course we can’t talk topiary without mentioning Buxus (Box) which we stock in enough shapes and sizes to suit every persuasion. Despite their flash designer haircuts topiary are relatively easy to maintain, a regular light trim will keep them in shape and if you use our fabulous ARS Hedge Trimmers you’ll find the job a pleasure. Once you’ve decided on your key plants then under-planting can be done with perennial colour or if you prefer a green palette consider mass planting Liriope Royal Purple, Trachelospermum jasminoides or for shady spots Pachysandra terminalis.

Once the glory of summer flowering has faded many shrubs offer decorative berries as an autumn feature. Viburnums – one of our favourite flowering shrubs at Wairere have some of the berry best colour and they are so easy to grow. The little Chilean Guava – Myrtus ugni also has decorative and edible berries at this time of year.

Autumn is also an excellent time to select and plant your favourite Citrus and Feijoa varieties. Nothing says Kiwi back-yard more than a Lemon Tree and a Feijoa Hedge! Don’t worry if you haven’t got a lot of space because both of these ornamental fruits will grow well in a container as long as they are fed and watered regularly.
