Hi ho, hi ho, it's of to work we go
yes it’s time to Spring into action ...
Spring is a beautiful, bountiful and busy time in the garden with lots of jobs to be done before the hot dry days of summer.
It will be "all go" for the next few months as it’s time to weed, feed, sow and hoe. In the vegetable garden 1st early potatoes should be in the ground along with peas. Don’t be in a hurry to plant tomatoes, beans, courgettes or capsicums as these vegetables will do better when the soil and air temperatures are warmer.
Fruit trees can still be planted and the sooner you get them in the ground the sooner you will be eating your own delicious fruit picked straight off the tree. Our little garden gnomes have been out shopping for some exciting new varieties and Wairere are very pleased to offer Coconut Ice a delicious new peach especially selected by Hort. Research – beautiful looking with blush pink skin that surrounds the delicious, crisp white flesh. Yum. Also in stock are two Flatto cultivars called Sweet Bonnet and Sweet Cap, delicious little snack size peaches. Talking about snack size there is a new range of bite size apples available too. These come from a Nelson breeder and have been grafted onto dwarf, or should that be Gnome, root stock to keep them small. For those of you who don’t have much space they can be container grown. Look for Apple Thumbelina Candy Crunch, Golden Crunch and Ruby Crunch.
In the ornamental garden there is still time to plant trees and shrubs and “must have” roses. We have limited stock of the new, multi-award winning roses Blackberry Nip, Ginger Kisses and Mamma Mia along with the very latest from Mr Austin - Wisley 2008 and Young Lycidas so be quick if you don’t want to miss out. And of course Wairere has the best selection in N.Z. of all your favourite, hybrid teas, floribundas, climbers, ramblers and standards.
Now if you’re looking for a really special feature plant to add to the garden check out our large Topiary Ilex Cones – these are simply superb, grown on and shaped lovingly by our Lloyd so you know you’re going to want one.
Wairere welcomes spring with a fantastic selection of quality plants so there’s really only one place to go when you really want to put on a show.
