Deciduous
It is very important to remember that whether your climber has been placed to screen a multitude of sins or has been selected for its own sheer beauty, it is going to lose its leaves in the winter and remain bald until spring. Therefore it is essential that if you wish an unsightly view to remain hidden, go for an evergreen climber. Just had to get that out of the way first!
In certain instances, it is desirable to have a clear view of the resting phase of a climber or vine. To see the bare stems as they twist through their support and around each other can be just as sensual as the magic of the plant in full leaf, bloom and fragrance and offers distinction of seasonal effect.

Deciduous climbers and vines are ideal for use on patio pergolas where shade is desirable in the summer months and sun in the winter months. Wisteria is wonderful for this purpose, allowing the light and warmth through the bare vines in the cold months, bursting into fragrant bloom in the spring and providing dense shade in winter. Have you ever seen the Wisteria 'trees' that LLoyd has trained at Wairere? They are spectacular and you must really make a point of coming to see them in Spring - around early October.
Or how about a grapevine that will drip with juicy fruit which can be plucked from the vine over the entertainment patio and popped into the mouths of lunch guests, roman style? The variety of deciduous climbers includes such spectacular species that it is worth giving serious thought to finding a place for one or more of them in the overall garden scheme. Think about dividing the garden into different ‘rooms’ using a trellis or fence with a climber clambering over it like a living wall. Just bear in mind that the wall will change its appearance with the seasons.
