Nectarine
A tree well worthwhile growing for its delectable fruit, the Nectarine is also a truly beautiful flowering specimen, with its blossoms bursting into ‘pinkness’ in the early spring. And, being a deciduous tree, it will also produce beautiful autumn foliage after the fruiting is over. Nectarines like moist, well drained soil in full sun but with some protection from strong wind for the spring blossom. Keep the ground around the base of the trees free of weeds and feed young trees with good quality organic compost. This is a good specimen to shape into an Espalier.
The question most commonly asked about nectarines is: Is the nectarine a peach without fuzz or is it a cross between a peach and a plum? Well here is the simple answer:
A nectarine is a mutant version of the peach. It has nothing to do with the plum at all.

Nectarines are genetically identical to peaches except they have a recessive gene that makes them smooth and fuzzless. And, for some more interesting trivia, how about this: The nectarine is also a member of the “Family of Flowering Plants” (Rosaceae; Rose, Peach, Apple, Pear, Strawberry family). They are in the same family as the Rose, but are also related to the Almond.
Nectarines, like peaches, were first cultivated in China, and were also cultivated in ancient Persia, Greece and Rome. In fact one Chinese emperor was so enthralled with nectarines that he and his people referred to them as the "nectar of the gods." And that is possibly how they got their name! As with peaches, nectarines can be white or yellow, with a noticeable pink tinge, and can have a more pronounced flavor than its peachy cousin. They can be clingstone (the fruit clings to the pit) or freestone (the flesh separates from the 'pit' easily). On average, nectarines are slightly smaller and sweeter than peaches. The lack of skin fuzz can make nectarine skins appear more reddish than those of peaches, contributing to the fruit's plum-like appearance. The lack of fuzz on the skin also means that their skin is more easily bruised than peaches.
Ripe fruit are fragrant and give, slightly, to the touch. If they are under-ripe, leave them at room temperature for 2–3 days to ripen. Besides being simply divine to eat just as is, slightly chilled, there are abundant recipes for the preparation of baked desserts, fruit shakes or smoothies, nectarine margaritas, nectarine and fish kebabs, cupcakes, jam, spreads, chutneys or, my all time favorite, nectarine and cucumber slices in Pimms No. 1 cup with lemonade and ginger ale on a hot summers evening. Nectar of the Gods!
