The best way to use fertilizer is to choose those that will provide some nutrients in quickly-available form for immediate growth, and others that contain nutrients that will be released slowly so that a single application in spring will continue to feed until cold weather stops plant growth in autumn. All through this cycle of combined slow and fast release, enough surplus nutrients are given off to provide food needed by soil organisms to carry on their functions, thereby ensuring that soil remains healthy.

• Instant fertilizers must not be directly applied to the roots as they will cause root burn - but are easily sprinkled on the soil around the plants. These fertilizers are more powdery or finer grained, thereby being able to break down and be absorbed faster than the slow release fertilizers. • Organic fertilizers such as Blood and Bone or Sheep Pellets take a bit of time to break down to the point where they can be utilized but will not cause any burn and will enrich the soil with essential nutrients in a sustainable manner.
