Fertilisers
The first thing that needs to be said in this section is: "Healthy Soil makes Healthy Plants". This is a fact, and the healthier that the plants are, the more resistant they will be to attack from pests and diseases. So fertilizing the soil and ensuring that lots and lots of organic and inorganic materials are introduced is essential.

The ideal garden soil fertilizer is one that supplies every element of nutrition needed by the plant. The best way to use fertilizer is to choose those that will provide some nutrients in quickly-available form for immediate growth, and others that contain nutrients that will be released slowly so that a single application in spring will continue to feed until cold weather stops plant growth in autumn. All through this cycle of combined slow and fast release, enough surplus nutrients are given off to provide food needed by soil organisms to carry on their functions, thereby ensuring that soil remains healthy.
Another method of feeding is via foliar spraying with a liquid fertilizer. This can often instantly increase the activity in the leaf which increases the photosynthetic process. This in turn increases the need for water in the leaf, which increases the uptake of water by the roots, which increases the intake of nutrients from the soil. All good!
And used in conjunction with lashings of compost - which you should be making yourself from all your garden waste - and well-rotted animal manures - such as sheep pellets - you will ensure that you get blooming marvelous results. And for those townies who don';;;;;;;;;t have space for compost bins, just using sheep pellets will go a long way to conditioning your soil - and they are so user friendly - just sprinkle!
- Slow release fertilizers can be applied directly to the planting hole as they will not burn the roots and will continue to feed the plants the whole growing season. They are granular or pelletized to ensure slow break down. Burnets and Thrive have a range of slow-release products for each type of plant.
- Instant fertilizers must not be directly applied to the roots as they will cause root burn - but are easily sprinkled on the soil around the plants. These fertilizers are more powdery or finer grained, thereby being able to break down and be absorbed faster than the slow release fertilizers. Obviously, if your plant needs a ‘quick fix';;;;;;;;; these are the ones to use.
- Organic fertilizers such as Blood and Bone or Sheep Pellets take a bit of time to break down to the point where they can be utilized but will not cause any burn and will enrich the soil with essential nutrients in a sustainable manner.
