Bourbon
The Bourbon rose is thought to have eventuated as an "accidental" cross between a China and a Damask Rose. Though how anything so beautiful can be considered an accident is beyond my understanding. The "accident" occurred on the Ile de Bourbon in the Southern Ocean (now known as Reunion) where roses are used as hedges. The resultant seedlings were thought to be of merit and were further developed to produce the Bourbon rose we recognize today.

Now when we say recognize it is not always easy to typify a Bourbon rose as some show more of the characteristics of the China parent - few thorns and pliable stems and others have more dominant Damask qualities, meaning they have more thorns and stiffer growth. Most however are known to be strong vigorous shrub roses with an arching growth habit. Bourbons have an excellent flowering and re-blooming ability plus a good strong perfume. The colour ranges from deep red through to strong pink, blush pink and white.
Whilst their heyday was from 1830-1850, when they were very popular world-wide, Bourbon roses still fit extremely well into the modern garden. It is rewarding to know that these classic charmers still endure and give pleasure to gardeners in the new millennium.
