China
It will come as no surprise to you that China roses do in fact originate from China. The Chinese were cultivating and hybridizing roses from as early as the 10th century and the rose world would not be what it is today without their contribution.
In the 1700';s Rosa chinensis "Old Blush" AKA "Parson';s Pink China" found its way to England and became the foundation for breeding "European" roses that repeat flower. Roses from China also introduced yellow and deep red to the European Rose.

China roses offer a quiet charm to the garden with dainty framework of relaxed stems and foliage. The leaves are dark and pointed and often tinged with red. The flowers open from slender buds and darken with age; they are mostly single or semi-double. The fragrance if any is usually quite soft.
For top performance they are happiest in a warm, sheltered position. If you are one of the many New Zealanders who have planted R. Mutablis, which is a China rose then you will know and appreciate this invaluable species.

The blooms of this rose have a slightly nodding effect and therefore present beautifully as a climber.

Mutabilis
China Rose. An exceptionally graceful rose which bears masses of slender pointed buds of vivid red opening to soft yellow then changing to coppery tones of pink and crimson. A continuous, spectacular and unusual display. One of my firm favourites. Bred prior to 1896.
The name Mutablis means 'changeable' which is what really describes the flower colour best. This rose is also described as the 'Butterfly Rose' as the single flowers float and dance above the foliage like a - you guessed it - a butterfly.
