Moss
Well I do declare! Roses with Whiskers! Talk about designer stubble! Moss roses certainly are novel and interesting and because of this were loved by the Victorians. They are not overly popular today - perhaps that';;s because there are very few grown and they are a little hard to source. The buds in particular are covered with tiny "bristles" that resemble moss. Very eye catching and interesting when they first fatten in late spring.
Moss roses do require a little more effort to grow and require a rich soil and a warm position with plenty of air circulation to avoid the dreaded mildew. It is probably a good idea to prune fairly heavily after flowering to prevent the bush becoming straggly.

If you would like to add a Moss rose to your collection then consider "William Lobb", gorgeous bright pink double flowers with a strong fragrance. "Madame Louis Leveque" is also quite desirable with large, warm pink, cupped blooms and a strong fragrance.
