Portland The Portland rose could be used as a symbol for the European Union as it is reputed to have been brought to England from Italy by the Duchess of Portland back in the 1800's and then made its way to France. The French at the time were passionate about roses and the hybridists from the Imperial Gardens continued breeding the original rose to achieve the charming little group that gardeners still love today.

Portland roses show a real willingness to flower, have great beauty and a pronounced "old rose" scent. Small and compact in habit they are perfect for a small garden or container. Definitely not to be overlooked when you are putting together your rose garden.
