If you have never met the beautiful and quite rare Kalmia family, allow me to introduce you.
Kalmia is a genus from North America. Kalmia latifolia is considered by some to be the most beautiful of evergreen shrubs. The English writer John Ruskin waxed eloquent about this beauty, describing its flowers as ‘little bowls of beaten silver, the petals struck by the stamens instead of with a hammer’. And as for the buds, they have been described as ‘surely being made by a cake decorator’.
The flowers are, however, not silver, but ranging from purest white through shades of pink to deep red and crimson. These glossy-leaved shrubs produce massed displays of banded flowers in late spring through to early summer. Kalmias prefer dappled shade and acid, well drained soil, and are hardy to frost. This is a rare beauty that is well worth finding a suitable spot in the garden for.
Nandina Fire Power
Experience the power of the colour of Fire! Nandina ‘Fire Power” is at its very best at this time of year as the cooler weather has turned the top level of leaves of the plant a gorgeous range of burnt red, orange, salmon, orange and burgundy. The range of greens is also quite diverse. This wonderful and versatile Japanese Sacred Bamboo is an absolute darling, not only providing fabulous colour, but also bright red berries that follow white flowers and remain on the plant well into the winter. Nandinas make a strong statement used as punctuation points in a shrubbery, or as focal points in key positions. Plant them in groups or drifts. They like sun but will handle some shade and are hardy, showing their best colours when it gets a bit frosty.

Their ramrod straight stems are well trained and they are ready and waiting for a perfect spot in a container or planted in the ground. They make a fabulous statement in placed in pairs framing a doorway or entrance or in key positions on a patio. And even when they have finished flowering, their high-gloss leaves continue to ensure their good looks.
