What's the most efficient way to water fruit trees? (from Doug)
Monday, 11th February 2008 03:10:38 PM
With water restrictions on, and trying to do my part to conserve water, whats the most efficient way give my fruit trees a drink with minimal wastage? Is it better to water at the drip line or closer to the trunk, in the shade. Thinking mainly feijoas at this stage.

Couple of things: water at night when the major uptake of water occurs and evaporation is at its lowest. Watering around the drip line is the way to go, and watering deeply once a week is preferable as, if shallow watering is frequent, roots wont go deeper to forage for water. Mulch after watering - this prevents water loss - pea straw is excellent for this, but dont put mulch right up against the trunk or collar-rot could set in. Consider using gray water too - if you use bio degradable cleaning products, the water is just fine to use. With young trees, do the old upside down cut-off coke bottle trick to get the water close to the roots.
