Planting in acidic soil (from )
Friday, 3rd April 2009 04:19:23 PM

Hi all, we are due to move to our new home next month. As a novice gardener I'm keen & excited about planning out this new plot but am aware of the restrictions I face as the property is on peat flats with highly acidic soil, is not very well sheltered & prone to frosts. I would like to know which plants will do well here? Any unusual ones? Plants for hedging? Structural specimens? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

hi there, you dont say what location but peat soils are fine for growing plants, though the addition of mulch and lime may be benefical. Peat can dry out and be difficult to rewet and I think that this may be one of its main problems. shelters can be grown and micro climates created given time. if you require more info then please ask away

Thanks lloyd! The property is in the Waikato, out the back of Ohaupo. It can get fairly wet there during the winter I think! I'm into quite modern planting schemes, fairly low maintenance & have a young family so need a fun & safe surrounds for the kids. Could you advise on some appropriate plants?

Do you have a concept plan or some garden layouts Are you ever over this way with digital photos and or dimensions of garden beds as it can be easier to show. Most plants will grow in most situations and wet winter can be fairly normal situations
