Our Garden

We found this three acres of land that was covered in Blackberry, Willows and Hawthorne. It was made up of a piece of high ground that overlooked a large wet area and had two very small stands of Kahikatea, which gave it a heap of character. We cleared all the rubbish and relocated a 1920s transitional bungalow and thought to establish a garden around the house, which we duly started. Then came a small garden centre, a miners cottage for my retired parent and we have since relocated a grand return verandas villa for ourselves as the other house has become offices and a landscape design studio.

Lake and Kahikatea's

To describe our garden: It is quite an eclectic mix of plants that appears reasonably formal in design though is quite informally planted and certainly compliments the old bungalow style house. Plants are fascinating to me and it's been fun to coordinate them into an appealing landscape that others can enjoy. From the garden centres point of view its great to show clients, design and plants, so that they can visualise for themselves their intentions.

Garden Setting

It has always been important to me to have the philosophy that a garden should look great all year round, as a spring garden tends to just happen, but for it to look good in the other seasons is my desire. Autumn and winter are favourite times as the garden is more subtle in its colours and has really good structure that helps hold it all together.

Back Garden

The front garden became, even in the early days a formal potager style garden framed with rosemary standards and edged with a silver thyme border. These days the concept is the same but we have used Camellias pleached and under planted with Liriopes and a Lonicera hedge. The front garden even though its formally laid out it is quite informal planted with key structural plants that differ, roses, coloured chard and whatever is going.

Pleached Camellias

The main lawn is informal in shape and is bordered with an iceberg rose hedge that looks amazing in the spring and leads the eye through an iron arch to a secluded circular lawn and then down the steps and around past a wisteria tree or two. You then go on to a perfectly round lawn from which to overlook a pond and out to a magnificent stand of Kahikatea. One of the few very last large remnants in the Waikato.

garden path

It has always been important to me that a garden, where possible should have a view and this is ours. From this vantage point you look to your left and there is another perfectly circular lawn sporting Japanese iris in the spring ending the season with a hedge of Kirin azalea blasting their bright colour pink upwards.
