All Fruit-and-Nuts

Have you noticed that there is a growing trend towards growing food in one’s own back yard? It is no longer the practice of only a few tree-hugging ‘greenies’ or permaculture practitioners, but has become a pretty mainstream, trendy and, lets face it, sensible thing to do. Apart from the sheer delight of plucking a ripe and juicy fruit specimen off the tree in your own backyard for instant gratification of the senses, the benefits of eating produce that has been grown with a modicum of control regarding the use of pesticides and herbicides is immeasurable.

And the well-worn wail of “Id simply love to grow fruit trees but I have no space in my garden” does not cut it. With the help of the technique of Espalier and with so many new varieties being bred that can live hapily in tubs, there is no excuse. One gardener we know has a variety of fourteen different fruits growing in her 500sq meter section and she still has space for ornamentals, a pond, veggies and a small native forest – plus the house of course.

Triploid. Don't you just love the name which refers to the size of this large English cooking apple. The skin is pale green and streaked with red. A vigorous disease resistant variety that has been around since 1820. Makes delicious Apple Sauce.

Triploid apples cant pollinate other apple trees as their pollen is sterile. If you have the space, plant it near two other non-triploid apple trees that bloom around the same time. That way, the bases for pollination of all trees are covered. If you’re limited on space, simply plant your triploid apple tree along with a self-pollinating apple tree. The self-pollinating variety will cover its own pollination needs as well as the needs of the triploid tree.

This apple which dates back to the 1800's is the perfect choice for baking - especially apple pies and apple sauce. Mmm.........The origins of the name of this apple are are as follows:- Mrs Peasgood from Lincolnshire planted 5 apple seeds from an un-named cooking apple, only 1 germinated and it produced such a wonderful apple it was named after Mrs Peasgood and the Nonsuch part of the name literally translates as "without equal".

Picture of Grapefruit Morrison Seedless

This is really quite an historical Grapefruit as it arrived in NZ from the Orient via Australia in the 1800's. The fruit was first grown by Sir George Grey in his orchard on Kawau Island and then developed further by Mr Morrison. The popular Grapefruit 'Golden Special' was in turn developed from 'Morrison's Seedless'.

The essential Lime to use for culinary purposes as all parts of the 'Kaffir' are strongly aromatic especially the unusual 'double' leaves - these are a vital ingredient in Thai and Indonesian cuisine. The fruit are green, rough and 'warty' and not particularly juicy. Evergreen.

The word "Kaffir" is Arabic for infidel or what Muslims used to call unbelievers. How it became associated with a Lime tree I have yet to discover. However in this case it has no relation to its use as a derogatory term in some cultures.

Standard. This Mandarin is very popular in Queensland where it was discovered as a chance seedling in 1888. The virtually thorn-less tree produces large fruit with a thin easy peel skin. The flesh is tender and juicy.Ripens around July. If left on the tree you will notice the skin gets 'puffy'. Evergreen.
