Have you noticed that there is a growing trend towards growing food in one’s own back yard? Apart from the sheer delight of plucking a ripe and juicy fruit specimen off the tree in your own backyard for instant gratification of the senses, the benefits of eating produce that has been grown with a modicum of control regarding the use of pesticides and herbicides is immeasurable.

 And the well-worn wail of “Id simply love to grow fruit trees but I have no space in my garden” does not cut it. With the help of the technique of Espalier and with so many new varieties being bred that can live hapily in tubs, there is no excuse. One gardener we know has a variety of fourteen different fruits growing in her 500sq meter section and she still has space for ornamentals, a pond, veggies and a small native forest – plus the house of course.

W.Murcott Afourer is a tangor of unknown parentage, which was imported to California from Morocco in 1985. The fruit is usually flattened with a thin, smooth, orange rind that is easy to peel. The fruit is low-seeded in the absence of cross-pollination. The flesh is orange-coloured and juicy, with a rich and sweet flavor. Evergreen.

Tangor Citrus are a cross between an Orange and a Mandarin. 'Dweet' has medium to large fruit that are sweet and juicy with a rich flavour. A highly ornamental bush with lush green foliage that fruits well from July to August. Grow in a sunny well drained position. Evergreen.

Murcott trees are moderate in size and vigor with a somewhat upright growth habit with willowy branches. The fruit tends to be borne near the outside of the tree. Small to medium size flat fruit with yellow-orange skin. The fruit is smooth and easy to peel. Has some seeds. Its rich red flesh is honey sweet and juicy, with a lovely fragrance. Heavy fruiting.
