Apples: they're good to the core!
The pre-historic Apple has endured to become one of the most popular fruits in the world today. Depending on your belief system apples have been known to the human race since time began. Just ask Adam! Carbonized remains of apples have been found dating back to the Stone Age so there is no doubt that the Apple has always been part of our food chain. With over 10,000 different known varieties there is bound to be an aple to suit your gardening style and your palate.

Apples make up 18% of all horticultural exports from New Zealand generating an income of $300 million plus. How about "them apples"? Apples are rich in fibre, calcium, potassium and Vitamin C. The Vitamin C content is found just under the skin so it is best to munch with the skin on. So you can see why an Apple day helps keep the Doctor away.

Heritage Apple. Originating from Ireland in 1820, 'Irish Peach' (yes an apple called Peach!) ripens early in summer. The skin is green with faint red stripes and the flesh is high quality with a very good flavour. This apple will not store well and is best eaten straight from the tree. Deciduous.

This apple bears its fruit on the tips of the branches and it pays to be aware of this when pruning i.e. don't cut back all the strong leaders with fruiting tips.

Triploid. Don't you just love the name which refers to the size of this large English cooking apple. The skin is pale green and streaked with red. A vigorous disease resistant variety that has been around since 1820. Makes delicious Apple Sauce.

Triploid apples cant pollinate other apple trees as their pollen is sterile. If you have the space, plant it near two other non-triploid apple trees that bloom around the same time. That way, the bases for pollination of all trees are covered. If you’re limited on space, simply plant your triploid apple tree along with a self-pollinating apple tree. The self-pollinating variety will cover its own pollination needs as well as the needs of the triploid tree.
