The grapefruit is a sub-tropical citrus tree grown for its fruit which was originally named the "forbidden fruit" of Barbados – in fact it is still regarded as one of the “Seven wonders of Barbados”. It is unclear as to whether this is due to the abundance of the fruit on the tree – hence its name Grapefruit, so-called because it looks like a big bunch of golden grapes on the tree – or whether it is due to the phenomenal properties of the content of the fruit.   The two major culinary uses for Grapefruit are Juice and Marmalade. Both are fantastic with a bit of sugar. But the Ruby Red grapefruits are superb for simply cutting open and eating. Great flavour – sweeter than the yellow-skinned cousin - but still astringent. And best when chilled.

aka Heritage Grapefruit

Citrus. 'Morrison's Seedless' was developed in NZ around 1860 by Mr Morrison from Warkworth. Whilst it is mainly seedless, due to cross pollination, you may get the occasional pip. The flesh is juicy with a delicious flavour. Large golden fruit that ripen from July-November. Evergreen.

This is really quite an historical Grapefruit as it arrived in NZ from the Orient via Australia in the 1800's. The fruit was first grown by Sir George Grey in his orchard on Kawau Island and then developed further by Mr Morrison. The popular Grapefruit 'Golden Special' was in turn developed from 'Morrison's Seedless'. Citrus Information Pages
