One of the biggest misconceptions in the world of gardening is that Roses are difficult and time-consuming to grow. Nothing could be further from the truth. Roses are easy to grow and are amongst the most tolerant of plants. Obviously, with the correct feeding and cultivation techniques they will perform to their absolute best. However even if you are the most neglectful gardener you should still be able to enjoy the perfection of a rose bush in bloom. After all Roses have endured since time as we know it began, and are still the most popular flower in the world today. So feel the fear and do it anyway - plant a rose or three. If you are still a little uncertain, click on our How To page for useful tips from Harry & Lloyd.

David Austin rose Mrs. Doreen Pike’ is a rose of modest charm. The deep pink flowers are in the form of neat, medium-sized rosettes and give the impression of mingling with the small, pale green leaves. It is very free-flowering and repeats very well. There is a lovely, strong Old Rose fragrance.

Bush. This rose is an old favourite of mine and many other NZ gardeners. Often found thriving in older gardens. The white flowers are very fragrant and open from long pointed buds. A profuse flowering rose throughout the summer. Generally hardy and tolerant. From Northern Ireland - 1910.

There is also an excellent climbing version of this lovely old rose that David Austin has on his 'recommended roses' list - as do we.

Picture of Mutabilis-Rose

China Rose. An exceptionally graceful rose which bears masses of slender pointed buds of vivid red opening to soft yellow then changing to coppery tones of pink and later in the season crimson tones. A continuous, spectacular and unusual display. One of my firm favourites. Bred prior to 1896.

The name Mutablis means 'changeable' which is what really describes the flower colour best. This rose is also described as the 'Butterfly Rose' as the single flowers float and dance above the foliage like a - you guessed it - a butterfly.
