One of the biggest misconceptions in the world of gardening is that Roses are difficult and time-consuming to grow. Nothing could be further from the truth. Roses are easy to grow and are amongst the most tolerant of plants. Obviously, with the correct feeding and cultivation techniques they will perform to their absolute best. However even if you are the most neglectful gardener you should still be able to enjoy the perfection of a rose bush in bloom. After all Roses have endured since time as we know it began, and are still the most popular flower in the world today. So feel the fear and do it anyway - plant a rose or three. Rugosa - Species. Glossy deep green foliage and enormous (10cm) flowers of pure white that are single and richly scented. A circle of golden stamens highlights the blooms which repeat on and off from spring to autumn. Lovely autumn foliage colour and red hips. Introduced to England in 1870.

As with all Rugosas this is a hardy and tolerant rose that copes well with poorer soils and even a little shade. Originally found in areas of Russia, China and Japan.

Hybrid Musk. Dark green glossy foliage and semi-double, lightly scented blooms from summer right through to autumn. The blooms are pink, blended with cherry red towards the outer edges. Quite light and frilly looking but overall a robust vigorous rose that will perform well. 1983.

This flowers of this rose also last well when picked for indoor floral displays.

Rugosa. The name 'Scabrosa' refers to the roughness of the handsome foliage which is clear green with interesting veining. The summer blooms are bright cerise pink offset with golden stamens and are followed by big fat red hips. Nice sweet fragrance. Robust and vigorous. 1950.

This rose could be used as a hedge as it grows into quite a tall specimen. The hips can be used for culinary purposes.
