As we leave the 1920’s behind and the birth of suburban life begins the modern Floribunda Rose starts to make an appearance. Compact and free flowering, this style of rose was just what modern gardeners were looking for.Initially these roses were known as Hybrid Polyanthas which we learnt last week means many flowered. The Americans, who were leaders in the development of this new style of rose, preferred the term Floribunda which they started to use in the 1930’s and this is the term still used by Rosarians today.

Poulsen Roses of Denmark did some of the initial breeding of Floribundas producing a rose called Red Riding Hood which led to two more Floribundas called Else Poulsen and Kirsten Poulsen introduced in 1924. The American Nursery Jackson and Perkins continued the development and introduction of many new Floribundas and at one time this family owned nursery was renowned as the world’s largest rose grower. To name drop just a few famous Floribundas: - where would we be without[C1]Iceberg (and its many permutations), Margaret Merrill, Sexy Rexy or Satchmo? A personal favourite of mine is Queen Elizabeth not because I am an avid royalist but it was the first rose I learnt the name and history of when I was a budding pre-teen gardener. The main characteristic of Floribunda Roses is that their flowers are carried in large clusters or sprays giving a mass display often from spring right through to autumn.
Floribunda. Dark green foliage with coppery red tones to the new growth. Large clusters of deep carmine blooms that are fully double and lightly scented appear continuously throughout the summer. Dense compact habit, from the Netherlands - 1954.

Floribunda. With a name like 'Scent to Remember' you absolutely know that this rose is going to smell delicious and it certainly does. Not only that it has exquisite, peachy apricot coloured blooms and is seldom without a flower from spring to autumn. Healthy disease resistant foliage. PVR. 2006.

Floribunda. An unusual rose that is technically called a red blend i.e. burgundy and white randomly striped blooms. Strong spicy fragrance and a vigorous bushy growth habit. Winner of Americas top rose award 1997. Something unique and different for the collector or rose enthusiast. PVR. 1997.

Floribunda. A fantastic healthy rose with bright, clear yellow blooms which are produced in abundance. Wonderful fragrance and excellent disease resistant foliage. Awarded a Gold Star of the South Pacific for its unrivaled flower power. PVR.
This rose is so highly rated by the NZRS members it was voted one of the top 5 healthiest roses in 2008.

Floribunda. This NZ bred, multi award winning rose flowers continuously throughout the summer. The large clusters of blooms are beautiful,very double and shaded a soft rose pink. Nice light perfume. An outstanding and deservedly popular rose. 1984. PVR.
Sam McGredy named this rose after his friend the late Rex Hotchin who was not at all like a pretty pink floribunda but a good friend worthy of naming a beautiful rose after.
